Q: Would it be worth it to sell my car in California?
I see those ad's in the paper sometimes. Car for sale with details and also its a California Car. So I was thinking, the next time I want to sell one of my cars, I would drive it down to my friends :) place in California, fly back home here to Canada and put an ad in the paper here. California car for sale. Do you think I could double my money doing that?

A: Most likely not, California has much stricter emission regulations than the other 49 states which is why car manufacturers have to specifcally make cars that can be sold in California. You can buy and register them in other states just the same, but they come with emission controls that usually rob horsepower and torque so nobody outside Cali would even want them, let alone pay extra money for them.

Q: How or where do I find out how to start my own business: used car sales in California?
I want to open up a used car dealership, something small under 25 cars for now I'm sure. So what my real question is maybe, do I need to start a business or get a license to sell cars? Do I need a lot? Can I just do it from home?

A: Here's California's how to handbook: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/vehindustry/ol/ol_handbooks/ol248.pdf Search engines are wonderful things.

Q: what is the new car sales tax rate in california?
what is the sales tax rate for buying a new car or used car in california?

A: It varies by city. You cannot buy a car in another city with a lower tax rate to avoid the higher rate in your city. The car dealer will ask you where you live and you still have to pay the full tax for your city. I know, it sucks. But many cities are going broke so they want their fair share. Anyway, see: http://www.boe.ca.gov/cgi-bin/rates.cgi * * *

Q: is there a seized car auction website in southern, california to buy cars for cheap?
i need to see them on the website like they have to be repossessed by the bank or impounded cars for sale, i heard they have brand new bmw's for like 20,000

A: I would recommend a site I use in my business (buying and selling large bulk lots of anything), and this site is GovernmentAuctions.org. They have tons of media coverage, and the CEO's been on CNBC, and they have faily good data and excellent support As far as a new BMW, you're not really going to find 2008 seized cars. Rather, your more likely to find 2003-2006 upscale cars like BMW, Mercedes and Lexus that have been seized by US Customs, IRS, or US Marshalls, and the price you'll pay will probably be very good compared to a dealer, but auctions for these high end cars can get somewhat competative, and so don't expect to get a steal on such a popular item as a high end car (although you can easily get steals on less popular or manageable items). That said, you can still walk away with a nice car bargain at these auctions. Just do your research with bluebooks and such before you go in to bid, and don't go above your predetermed maximum bid. As far as California, I know of at least two regular federal government auctions that take place every several months at which these types of cars are sold, and GovernmentAuctions.org and their top-notch support staff will get you the info you need. They also have websites listed on which you can bid for US Marshalls and US Customs cars online, but I would not recommend doing that unless you physically inspected the car (which you can most of the time do), and they've started it for you (which they do). For your reference, in my sources, I've posted a link to a video of one of these federal auctions at which seized vehicles are sold. Good luck.

Q: Can you charge people sales tax on used cars if their legal address is in a state with out sales tax?
I just purchased a used car in california and got screwed over in many ways. They charged me 2% california sales tax for the car which ended up being $655.00! But I am a resident of New Hampshire where they do not have sales tax... so my legal residency is NH not california. Should I have been charged the tax?

A: Sales tax in CA is a lot more than 2%. It was probably something else.

Q: How to sell a car in California?
I have a '94 Ford Taurus Wagon. I lost the title, but I have the "application for a Duplicate Title" which is apparently the same form you use to transfer a title if you HAVE a duplicate title. I also have the "Notice of transfer and Release of Liability" form. Do I have to turn in the "Application for Duplicate Title" before I list my car for sale? Also, what else do I need to do?

A: The application for dup title is as good as a title as long as..... 1.There are no leins listed with DMV. If a lein is showing on your registration, you will need a lein release from the leinholder. 2.You are the registered owner listed on the registration. 3.The buyer will accept this form. It would be better to just go to DMV and get a new title. That form is used to get a new (duplicate) title.

Q: I need your help about car for sale websites?
Do you know any websites that sell cars in California besides from craigslist.com, cars.com and ebay.com? Im looking for a model 2000+ Isuzu Trooper 4x4

A: Try carmax.com Their search page is: http://www.carmax.com/dyn/usedcar/usedcar.aspx It is a nation wide chain. Like any used car dealer I have heard good and bad about them. So as with any car dealer be cautious. Also I would suggest with buying any used car, it is a good idea to let a good independent mechanic give the car a good check out before you buy it. (The money you spend for the check over can save you a lot of headaches and a lot of money later.)

Q: Is it illegal to drive with a FOR SALE sign on your car in California?

A: As far as Calif State law goes, if it is on a window, then yes. Anything that obstructs your vision is illegal, including things hanging from your rear-view mirror like the handicapped tags the State supplies (they are only supposed to be put on the mirror when you are parked).

California has strict emission standards, of course - and some cars for sale in the other 49 states cannot be brought into CA. How does one know with 100% certainty that they can import a specific model? Would not want to import it only to be told it must be exported or "surrendered for destruction"......THANKS!

A: Check with the DMV in California to be sure that you can

Q: In California I bought a lein sale car and need to know can i get a regular smog or do i have to get a test o?
I got this car from a tow yard and need it smoged I already payed for registration but need the smog to get the plates can I go to a regular shop or does it need to be test only smog

A: Unless your been told to go to a test only station you can take it to any shop that's licensed to do smog inspections. This will save you a lot of hassle in case it fails. In California it's normally the sellers responsibility to provide the smog certificate. At least that's the case with regular dealerships and private parties.
