Q: Im Having some trouble with my 72 ford mustang?
I just recently bought the car about 4 months, until this point it hasn't given me any problems, until about 2 weeks ago. when i turn on my car after not driving for a while it'll turn on no problem, the car won't over heat or anything if I drive it for a long period of time, but if i turn it off, say to get some gas, and then i try turning it on the car won't turn on, it makes this wierd noise as if its about to turn over but it just doesn't quite get there. if I leave it off for 45 min. to an hour. It seems to start up pretty easily, sometimes it takes 2 to 3 try's but it turns on. I took it to the mechanic and he wasn't so sure, so much for that. The mechanic said that I may have a faulty STARTER, and something about my carburator flooding up. Is it my starter, even though my starter works when the car hasn't been used, alternator maybe, or is it over heating. Can someone help me out with this???????

A: I believe this to be a starter issue. It sounds like the fairly common problem with old Ford starters, they do not function well when hot, and engine heat counts. If/when you replace it, try to get a mini starter(Physically smaller, high torque starter), as it won't have this issue. Also, about the carburetor, you might just need to "learn" your engine a little better. I found on my Thunderbird that since it is a daily driver, one pump of the throttle in the morning will start it quickly, and just about any time throughout the day(referred to as a Hot start) I can just crank it over to start it without using the throttle. But it really depends on how your carburetor is set up, it very well may need a rebuild/replacement.

Q: Horsepower question -72 mustang with ford 400 engine?
The engine has had work done to it looking at the papers it says it was bored .03 over to 4.03. It has a 4 barrel 600cfm carburetor, edelbrock performer intake and 9.5-1 compression ratio. What kind of horsepower do you think its putting out? good to know according to the paperwork looks like its got a hydraulic camshaft from comp cams 32-242-4. cant find anything about headers though. good to know according to the paperwork looks like its got a hydraulic camshaft from comp cams 32-242-4. cant find anything about headers though. http://www.compcams.com/Cam_Specs/CamDetails.aspx?csid=847&sb=1 its a 400 for sure.

A: boring doesn't really add any, and the intake and carb only add a little, so get that cam and headers and then talk about horsepower.. ADDED: The 400 was never offered in the Mustang, so it must be a custom installation.. The Ford 400 engine was based on the 351 Cleveland but was produced with a taller deck height of 10.297 inches compared to the 351C's 9.206 inches. This allowed for a longer stroke while retaining the 351C's Rod-Stroke ratio. These blocks also share the same oiling route in the block. The 400 also featured larger (Windsor sized 3.00 inch with Cleveland cap register) main-bearing journals and had "square" proportions, with a 4.0 in (102 mm) bore and stroke; it therefore displaced 402 cu in (6.6 L), making it the largest small-block V8 made at that time. It was introduced in model year 1971 with a full half-inch (12.7 mm) longer stroke than the 351 Cleveland, making it the longest-stroke Ford pushrod V8 engine. A long-stroke engine has good low-end torque. This was a good compromise given Ford's requirement for an engine to power heavier mid-size and full-size cars and light trucks. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_335_engine

Q: Can i put a Ford 360 in my 92 Ford Mustang LX 2.3?
And if i can, what do i need to do? The 360 is coming out of a 72 Ford pick-up. Both Mustang and pick-up have auto trans. I believe the pick-up has a C4 but not sure. I know i need a radiator and a a fan maybe. But what other stuff will i need to do to squeeze the 360 in there, if its even do-able? ... ... And to PMack, yes, ford does have a 360 idiot. 1972 Ford F-100. Alot of them, stock with a 360. I know, because I own one ;) Anyhow, thanx for the answers guys ;)

A: There are FE foxes out there they are few and far between though. I seen one with 428cj in at carisle 2 years ago. You would be lookin at one hell of a project plus things like custom headers to make it work. The typical big blocks you see in a fox are the 429/460's. I've also seen more 351 clevelands lately. I wanted to do a cleveland swap, but decided to stroke a 351w into a 408 instead. As far as your 360 goes this what would concern me weight, deck height and width. You might run into hood clearance problems and may end up spending serious money on headers to make it work. I know 351c swap headers are about 700 and go up. Also, bigger brakes are well mandatory. The 4cyl brakes barely have what it takes to stop a 5.0l let alone the heavier 360. Front suspension upgrade is needed. I would also upgrade to a 8.8" or a 9" rear end. You would also have to replumb the fuel lines because the 4 cyl was fuel injected and has a electric intank fuel pump. The 360 would be carbed and have an engine mounted mechanical pump. Just a few things to think about.

Q: Where can I get the hood from the Ford Mustang 99-04(body style) KR-S Body Kit?
I wanted the body kit, mainly the hood/grill for my mustang. It looks like the hood in the pic covers the grill like its all one piece. I cant find the hood anywhere. Help please!!!! Link: http://216.127.72.208/_images/e_images/99_mustangkrscomplete.jpg -A

A: That is a Kaminari - they have it available in duraflex w/the carbon fiber ram air insert and in all carbon fiber w/the ram air insert. http://kaminari.com/catalog/14

Q: which one of these cars are the coolest and why?

A: cars are not cool any more. I guess you are in the 60+ age group.

Q: would this make an interesting racing series?
it started out as a joke but i've since molded it into something interesting that I would watch (and command if I could) its a ranking national series but it has 7 "miniseries" that are all national and high-ranking (which I will list from lowest-ranking to highest ranking) Teen Series: Eligible ages 8-20 this series is for the upcoming racers who wish to make it big. The Season is 16-20 races a year, all over the US (Road Courses, Ovals but mostly Short Tracks), From Easter to Halloween. The Races are mostly 150-300 Mile Races but the Longest Endurance Race is the Season Opener: 5 hour energy 5 hour dash on a pre-desgined City Course: http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y163/jabber1990/Cape72010Layout.jpg?t=1259557942 (Blue Line=racing surface yellow line=pit road) Cars: Dodge Neon Ford Focus Chevrolet Cavalier The cars have 6-cylinder engines for more speed and more interesting racing Dirt Division: Eligible ages: 15-no max Dirt Division occurs either before or after the Teen Series. The racing occurs March-November at different dirt tracks all over the US. no Endurance races Cars: Late Models (don't know much about dirt racing) The cars have regular 6 Cylinder Engines 2-Year Series Eligible Ages:17-no max A series with mostly 300-400 Mile races. The season has 72 Races during a 2-year period, starting in March (of odd numbered year) and ending in September (of the next year) Only 1 Endurance race a 500 mile Race at Dover at the half-way point Cars: Ford Focus Dodge Neon Chevrolet Cavalier these cars have Teen Series Engines Practice Series Eligible Ages: 16-no Max A slighty-harder Series. with V-8 Engines, 350-400 mile races. 2 endurance races, a 500 Mile race at Watkins Glen and a 500 mile race at Martinsville. Races in 30 events from August to May Cars: Ford Fusion Chevrolet Impala Dodge Charger These Cars come with COT Wings as opposed to Spoilers Supervan Series Eligible Ages: 17-no Max an idea I am still working on. it has 150-200 mile races on all types of tracks Races from August to May Cars: I cant Decide between Ford Transit Chevrolet Express Dodge Sprinter or Ford Edge Chevrolet Traverse Dodge Journey Sports car Series 400-500 mile events plus a 24 hour endurance race (on a Road Course) 34 Races a season between August and May Cars: Ford Mustang Chevy Camaro Dodge Challenger Top Division The "Sprint Cup" of the series. 40 400+ Mile races on Road Courses, Short Tracks, Super-speedways, Plate Tracks and even 2 Dirt tracks from August to May plus a 7 hour Endurance Race on a city course (See Teen series endurance race) Cars: Ford Fusion Chevrolet Impala Dodge Charger These Cars have the Nationwide type Spoilers on them. this is just stuff I think about tell me what you think I am willing to listen to everyone's opinion

A: Great theory, but for young drivers starting out they would need large sums of money and rather large teams to travel around and run races of the lengths you suggest. NASCAR already supports a nation wide series for short track late models that run at NASCAR sanctioned short tracks. Also included are special All-star type races where the best short track teams from different regions are invited to race.

Q: I am road tripping to texas from ohio, can an old car make it?
Me and my friend are road tripping to kerrville, texas (2 hours from san antonio) from columbus ohio. I am thinking about buying this car for the trip: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/76-Super-Beetle-Convertible-Nice-Driver-CA-Car_W0QQitemZ330314271908QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUS_Cars_Trucks?hash=item330314271908&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245&_trkparms=72%3A317%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318 do you think it could make it there and back? what would go wrong with the car? is it a bad idea? what should i worry about? do you think purchasing that car is a good idea? Is the price reasonable for that car? how long do you think it will last? so many questions, but thank you! also, i am either getting that old bug, or i recently have thought about purchasing an old 65'-66' mustang convertible would that be a smarter idea to drive from ohio to texas? like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1966-Ford-Mustang-Convertible-289-4V-auto-barn-find_W0QQitemZ300300809399QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUS_Cars_Trucks?hash=item300300809399&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245&_trkparms=65%3A7%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1308#ebayphotohosting (which is not as "pristine" as that bug) (it might not be that specific mustang, because that one is a little too expensive and has some rust, but i doubt i can find a nicer one for any cheaper) So between the two, which one would make me and my friend to texas without breaking down? thank you thank you thank you!

A: It is absolutely impossible to tell from the picture if it could make the trip. The VW looks good cosmetically. The Mustang would look better on the road, but it does need extensive body work. It could be in better or worse shape mechanically than the VW. The Mustang being in KY would be closer, maybe close enough to test drive it. The VW is in CA. How are you going to get it to OH? Drive it - that would be a test of it's ability. But be sure to have about $3,000 in should the engine fail. I bought a 72 VW Van. The owner said the engine was overhauled. Well, it was. But they stripped out the spark plug threads on one cylinder and the fuel shut off solenoids in the two carburetors. I drove that thing cross country (TX - GA - NY - TX) before these problems manifested themselves. $5,000 for that car is a little expensive even if the owner thinks it's a classic car and priced accordingly. When you buy a used car, you are buying someone else's problem child. No one sells a perfectly good running used car. You buy it as is, where is. The will deny any major problems unless they have a guilty conscience - they want to sell the car for the highest price they can get.

Q: How can I work out my schedule?
I'm 16 and I want to get a job so I can save up for a car. I start driving in October and I want to buy a 2010 Ford Mustang GT. I figured if I work at Publix, I'll be making about $700-$800 a month which will be enough for a 72 month financing, gas, and some more money to put in the bank. The problem I have though is that I have school and I play sports. It might be a little easier to do being that summer is right around the corner. Right now, I have football work outs tuesday, thursday and saturday for about an hour and a half starting at around 4:30. Then in March starts wrestling workouts for next season and on top of that I have a good amount of school work being that I go to a Jesuit high school. If thee is anybody in the same boat as me or have had the same predicament, please give me some tips. Thanks!

A: Find a job that will only work you weekends or give up one of your activities. Got to set priorities. Most employers that hire students understand that they will be limited in the amount of hours they can work.

Q: what car would be a good restoration project for a teen?
hi, im 16 and have my permit, getting my license in febuary. i have a nissan pickup for reliable driving, and also interested in restoring a car by senior year. i have a job and just a little over $1,000 or a grand saved. im a huge mopar fan, mopar or no car, but realistically parts are expensive for example roadrunner or b body quarter panel is 500 compared to 200 for a gm a body like chevelle. so i am willing to sacrafice my love for mopar and get something else. dont get me wrong i can put brands aside, i love all muscle cars, gm ford, amc, mopar. but i never restored a car, and i work at a automotive shop and have help if i need it. the guy i work for restored a camaro and mustang. and also were in the middle of restoring a chevelle, 67 corvette, and a cutlass. so on a budget making minimum wage, maybe some help from mom and pop, what should i do? im thinking 69-72 skylark or cutlass. also ford torino. this way i can have some extra money for other things on the car like stereo, engine upgrades.

A: I'm partial to the Mustang so that would be my suggestion, but if Mopar is your favorite then you should got for it. The Dodge Darts are great cars, you've also got the Plymouth Fury, the Coronet, and the more common Chargers, Challengers, Road Runners, etc. My advice is to look for a car that isn't one of the "Top 10" muscle cars, so to speak. This will make it easier to find one for less money in better condition. Also - look for a car with a sound body and only minor motor/trans problems. This will make you first resto project more enjoyable than frustrating - trust me.

Q: what size belt do i need?
its a 1990 mustang gt. no smog pump. the ac was removed but i just put a ford racing delete kit which gave the need for bigger belt. but at the same time i added under-drive pulleys on alternator, water pump, and crank and now the belt i have is too big. i believe its 72 or 73 the tensioner is where the belt runs into its self. its so long that the tensioner is straight up and down. i bought the car with tensioner that had ground off nub on back. replaced that. and the ac was removed without kit and power steering bracket broke so it flexed. the ac delete kit fixed that so i think a new belt and the belt drive will be good for first time since i owned car

A: Measurement may be taken with a piece a wire just to have a idea

A: I had an old Cutlass and loved it, that's the way I would go. You know this is going to cost a HUGE amount of money to do properly, right? It's great that you can do work yourself and have some experienced help, but even still, it's going to cost a ton...
